As I was moving ahead occasionally I saw brief glimpses of beauty. - Jonas Mekas

Really? Lost Weekend over Sunset Blvd. and Ace in the Hole? I mean, all three are fucking amazing, but…

Billy Wilder is my favorite Hollywood studio director.  I honestly haven’t seen a movie of his I don’t like.  I just as easily could have chosen Ace in the Hole or Sunset Blvd as they are both great films and top tier Wilder, but I just have a personal preference for The Lost Weekend.  It’s so dark for a studio film and I love the surrealism, but at the same time I find his outrageous alcoholic binge to be somehow romantic, as he wanders around all weekend avoiding responsibilities in a drunken abyss.  It’s kind of the opposite of the moral the film hopes to achieve, but that almost makes it even better for me haha.
