All of those films are great, but my problem with Wilder is his lack of a signature style. Many of his films do not bear his fingerprints. He was much more of a craftsman than an auteur. A great craftsman, but one nonetheless.

I don’t know if I necessarily agree with that.  His auteurism shines through his writing more so than any visual stylization and I think the kind of films he wrote and directed and working in the confines of Hollywood required a more conservative aesthetic approach to allow the material and actors to be the main focus.
